- Pam Hawkins, President
- Pam is the Deputy Director for Housing
Operations at the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA)
since April 2005. In her role, Pam oversees the direction of
all resident activities, administering all operations of
property management; writes and administers grants and
contracts and ensures compliance with federal, state, and
local laws. Prior to this she served AMHA as the Director of
Resident Support Services Department from1987 – 2005 and
from 1984 – 1987 she was a Family Development Manager.
- Prior to joining AMHA she was employed
for 15 years at the YWCA of Summit County serving in the
positions of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation
Director for the Cuyahoga Falls Branch and the Executive
Director of the Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge Branches.
- Pam holds a B. S. degree from the
University of Akron in Community/Adult Education and Health,
Physical Education and Recreation.
- She is a graduate of Leadership Akron
program Class XVI.
- Among her current community activities:
Pam has been appointed to the Summit/Medina Workforce
Investment Board; Board Member of Community Support Services
Board of Directors; Secretary of Mature Service Board of
Directors; Board Member for Healthy Connections, and Member
of the Adult Basic Literacy Advisory Committee for Akron
Public Schools.
- She has received special awards: Thanks
Badge from Western Reserve Girl Scout Council, Friend of the
Field Award from the Community Drug Board, 2000 Women of
Distinction Award from Western Reserve Girl Scout Council
and 2001 100 Outstanding in Summit County from the YWCA.

- Les is one of the newest board members of
Caring Communities of Summit County. He is currently a test
administrator and has previously worked with Summit County
Department of Human Services and the M. O’Neil Company.
- Les has many community affiliations: TAG
Advisory Committee-HMLOS, Summit County W.I.C. Committee,
Summit County Sports Hall of Fame Committee, and Tiretown
Golf Club Executive Committee.
- In addition to his community
affiliations, Les is a member of several Halls of Fame:
Summit County, Ohio University, and the State of Ohio. Les
was also a member of 1960 Olympic Team-Silver Medal-200
meters, and of the 1959 Pan American Team-Silver Medal-200
meters.
- Les has been married for 46 years to
Barbara Jean and is the proud father of 3 children: Corrie,
Leslie, and Lester Jr.

- Joseph is actively involved with the
Akron Urban League and other community organizations.
- Leona Wright Farris
- Leona has been involved with Caring
Communities of Summit County for nearly five years. Leona is
86 years young and has not lost her zest for life. Leona is
active in the community and serves on a number of boards and
associations. She is currently involved or has been involved
in the past with the following: Area Agency on Aging
Advisory Committee, Foster Grandparents Advisory Committee,
OASIS Advisory Committee, Executive Committee—Dr. Shirla R.
McClain Gallery of Black History and Culture, the University
of Akron, Treasurer ZTO Housing Corporation, AKA Sorority
House, University of Akron, Second Baptist Church, Assistant
Moderator, Life Fellow, Institute for Life Span Development
and Gerontology, the University of Akron, African and the
African American Committee for Alzheimer’s Association.
- Leona is a 1940 graduate of The Ohio
State University and in 1970, she obtained her Master’s
Degree in Home Economics from Kent State University. Leona
joined the faculty of the University of Akron in 1969 as an
assistant professor in the School of Home Economics and
Family Ecology. Mrs. Farris later became the Director of
Community Involvement in Home Economics.
- Mrs. Farris was married for fifty-eight
years to Dr. Melvin E. Farris. They had four children plus
one foster child. Their children are: Judith Farris Kizzie,
Betty Farris Wilson, Melvin E. Farris, Jr., Laura Farris
Daugherty, and foster son, Gregory Walker.
- Bernadette Kiel, LPCC,
LICDC, Secretary
- Bernie is another new board member of
Caring Communities of Summit County and looks forward to
becoming more involved.
- Bernie is a licensed clinical counselor
and licensed chemical dependency counselor in private
practice for over 20 years. Bernie has worked in many
community agencies which include Greenleaf Family Center,
The Community Health Center, Edwin Shaw hospital and Child
Guidance Center.
- Bernie previously served on the Advisory
Board of the TAG program at HM Life Opportunity Services.
Organizations in the community that Bernie actively supports
through volunteer work and with donation are: Greenleaf
Family Center, The Good Samaritan Hunger Center, Community
Aids Network and Hospice of VNS.
- Dr. Kathie Owens
- Kathie is an Associate Professor at the
University of Akron in the College of Education.
- Kathie began teaching mathematics and
science at the middle school level in Rochester, NY where
she grew up and got her BA in Mathematics at Nazareth
College. Her Masters degree in science education is from
Texas A&M University. After she married, she moved to
Pascagoula, Mississippi where she taught these same subjects
for 20 years.
- She received a doctorate in curriculum
and instruction from the University of Southern
Mississippi in 1997, the same year she became an assistant
professor at the University of Akron. In her current job,
she prepares future middle school science teachers,
supervises student teachers, develops curriculum, conducts
educational projects, and provides service to the college
and the community.
- Her husband is a retired science teacher
and together they have two sons and one grandson. She enjoys
traveling, gardening, church activities, and family
gatherings. In 2005, Kathie and her husband spent nine weeks
in Nigeria visiting schools and meeting
teachers to learn about education in West Africa. They have
also been involved in the post-Katrina recovery of her
former middle school in Mississippi.
- James Toles
- Jim has been with Caring Communities for
3 years. Previously, he worked for the U S Postal Service
for 33 years, retiring in 1992. Jim currently serves as
President of the Board of Directors for Buckeye State Credit
Union.
- Jim volunteers annually with Keep Akron
Beautiful, planting flowers at Crouse
Elementary School. He also works with Summit 2010: A Quality
of life Project for the Buchtel Neighborhood.
- On the first Monday of each month, Jim
helps prepare up to 300 lunches at Haven
of Rest for their clients.
- Renae Woods
- Renae is CEO of Overstreet Financial
Group.
